Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the dedication of our volunteers, the Friends have been able to make a lasting difference to St Mary’s & St Eanswythe’s – both for the people who use the church every day and for future generations.

Completed improvements

Organ repairs

The Friends contributed around £5,000 towards essential repairs to the organ, helping to preserve one of the church’s most treasured instruments for the congregation and community to enjoy.

Modern collection box

We purchased a modern, secure collection box to make it easier for visitors to donate and to ensure that all contributions are kept safe. A small but important improvement that helps us sustain the church’s work.

Refreshment bar

The Friends arranged and funded the design and construction of a purpose-built refreshment bar – replacing the rickety wardrobe that once held the crockery and the old folding table we served from. The new bar is now regularly in use for events including our popular Sips and Saints evenings.

Under-pew heating

One of our largest fundraising achievements: the Friends raised £46,980 through grants and donations to install under-pew heating and heating chandeliers throughout the church, bringing warmth to a previously very cold building.

Reverend David Railton M.C. Exhibition

The Friends brought the Reverend David Railton M.C. exhibition into the church on a permanent basis, complete with a recreation of the iconic image of the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, produced with the kind permission of Westminster Abbey.

Augustine murals – digital preservation

The historic murals depicting Augustine bringing Christianity to England were at risk of damage from damp. The Friends arranged for these irreplaceable works to be professionally scanned and digitally preserved, ensuring they will not be lost.

About to be installed

We are also delighted to share that the following improvements are currently in progress:

  • A new display unit to replace our eclectic collection of desktops and stands, which currently hold leaflets, magazines, notelets, and cards for sale – giving the church entrance a cleaner, more welcoming feel.
  • A contribution towards new pew seats, making it possible for every visitor and worshipper to sit in comfort.

None of this would be possible without you.

Every improvement listed here has been made possible by the donations, fundraising, and tireless effort of our members and supporters. If you’d like to get involved or make a donation, we would love to hear from you.
